Why Spay or Neuter?

Having your pet altered is an important step in ensuring that he has a long and healthy life.  In addition, having your pet spayed or neutered can make your life easier.  Studies show that altered pets live longer and are less likely to be surrendered to shelters than intact animals. Some other points you may want to consider are listed below.

Benefits of spaying and neutering:

  • Fixed pets are less likely to mark their territory either inside or outside your house, reducing odor and cleanup
  • Fixed pets are less likely to escape and roam in search of mates, keeping them safely close to home
  • Fixed pets are less likely to be involved in aggressive behavior toward people or other animals
  • Fixed pets have less risk of some types of cancer later in life
  • Fixed pets will not have litters of unwanted puppies and kittens

Our shelters are already overcrowded, with millions of unwanted pets being euthanized every year because there are not enough homes for them.  Population control is the bottom line, so please do your part and have your pet altered as soon as it is old enough (about 4 or 5 months for most animals.)

Spaying or neutering your pet WILL NOT:

  • Fix established behavior problems, though it can prevent aggressive behavior in some cases if done when the animal is young enough
  • Make your pet fat  (pets get fat from overeating, just like people)
  • Make your pet lazy
  • Alter your pet's personality or make them depressed
  • Traumatize your pet (really, they will never know the difference!)

When you bring your pet in to be spayed or neutered, he or she will receive a complimentary exam and we will notify you of any problems we find (such as ear mites, intestinal worms, etc.)  The surgery will take place in the morning and you will be able to take your pet home that same afternoon.  The surgery is quick and safe and your pet will recover quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Will my pet have stitches? Male and female dogs will have stitches, as well as female cats.  Only female dogs will need to return to have them removed, since we use absorbable stitches for cats and male dogs.
  • Shouldn't I let my female pet have one litter? Nope, this is just an old wives' tale and there is no reason to do it.
  • What if my pet is older? Elderly pets may need a checkup before surgery.  Please call the office to discuss your particular pet's needs with us.
  • What if my pet is already in heat? Please call the office to discuss your pet's situation before bringing her in for surgery.
  • How old should my pet be? Both puppies and kittens should be at least 4 or 5 months old before they are altered.  If you are unsure of your pet's age you may call for an appointment and let Dr. Cobb take a look.
